About Us

Founded in 2019, Rise in STEM is a community-driven network dedicated to increasing access to role models, challenging stereotypes, and showing youth that any career aspiration is possible.

Our Story

Rise in STEM was founded by Irene Duah-Kessie, inspired by her experiences as a first-generation student navigating post-secondary education and noticing a lack of representation and access to STEM pathways. This motivated her commitment to advancing racial equity in education, health, and the workforce.

  • From these foundations, Rise in STEM has grown into a youth-centred organization that provides meaningful opportunities, peer learning, and accessible resources to support Black youth and underserved students in exploring STEM pathways and future careers.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, our programs have continued to grow through the support of mentors, volunteers, collaborators, and community partners. We remain committed to expanding opportunities and support for Black youth in STEM.

We believe that when young people are given safe spaces to share ideas, collaborate, and grow, there are no limits to what they can achieve.

  • A strong and socially conscious STEM workforce where youth across underserved communities have the opportunity to participate and thrive in the global economy.

  • We recognize the lack of racial diversity in STEM. Rise in STEM exists to increase representation across STEM fields and support youth in pursuing their goals within a culturally responsive and supportive learning environment.

  • To level the playing field for Black youth by breaking down barriers to higher education and STEM career pathways. We provide resources and opportunities to enhance well being, leadership and technical skills, ensuring youth are well-equipped for success in today’s digital society.

  • Our target demographic is African, Black, and Caribbean youth, however, programs are inclusive of youth aged 13-18 in the GTA.
